Budget doesn’t have to cost your dream home

Often a costly undertaking, building a new home can potentially break the bank.

However, with effective budgeting and understanding where you can afford to choose a low-cost option and where you cannot afford to skimp, you can ensure you have a better footing in the homebuilding journey.

There are several affordable alternatives which can help you save a bit of cash, both in the short and long term.

Summit New Homes Design Manager Peter Wilkinson said the building industry had seen many changes in block sizes and buyer demographics in the past five years and the need to look for smarter and more affordable ways to design homes had arisen.

“Building in brick veneer, for example, will not only increase your sustainability and acoustics in the home, it’s also a more affordable building method due to its efficient construction time,” he said.

“The use of steel trusses also gives you the option to create stunning design features such as roof recesses and entryways at a more affordable price.”

When budgeting, Mr Wilkinson said there were some parts of the home which you could not afford to pay less on.

“There’s no question that one of the most important areas of the home to spend your money on is the front elevation,” he said.

“A quality, timeless design not only sets the tone and style for the entirety of your home, it also means you’ll have incredible street appeal which creates demand when it comes to resale.”

The heart of the home – the kitchen – is also an area which you should fork out a bit more cash for.

“The kitchen proves time and time again to be the central hub for entertaining, meals and everyday family gatherings,” Mr Wilkinson said.

“For this reason, a well-designed kitchen is always at the top of the shopping list when it comes to searching for a new home. Plus, a kitchen designed with a functional layout, quality finishes and ample storage provides better liveability for you as the homeowner.”

Mr Wilkinson said when it came to saving during the homebuilding process to not be afraid to ask your builder what alternative building methods were available, as it could save you time and money in the long run.
