Dodgers activate Joe Kelly from Injured List – Daily News

On Wednesday, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said reliever Joe Kelly would join the team “soon.”

“Soon” arrived Thursday afternoon.

The Dodgers activated Kelly from the Injured List in advance of their three-game weekend series against the Angels. Left-hander Scott Alexander replaced him on the IL with shoulder inflammation.

Alexander had not pitched since Saturday in Milwaukee and Roberts said Tuesday that Alexander had come up “sore” and was unavailable for the doubleheader in Chicago. Before Wednesday’s game against the Cubs, Alexander played catch and told Roberts the soreness had dissipated. He warmed up at one point during Wednesday night’s game at Wrigley Field but was not used by Roberts.

Alexander is the 12th Dodger to spend time on the IL this season, and the ninth pitcher.

Kelly opened the season on the IL after limited participation during spring training. He later revealed that he had surgery on his pitching shoulder in November to treat cysts in the joint.

Kelly pitched just 13-2/3 innings last season (including 3-2/3 during the Dodgers’ postseason run) due to his shoulder problems. He is in the final year of a three-year, $25 million contract that has produced limited dividends. Kelly has a 4.11 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 67 appearances for the Dodgers over the past two seasons.
