Eminem mural defaced within hours after going up; Detroit artist vows to start fresh

Artist Chris Devins had already planned to return to Detroit to fix up the Eminem mural he painted in the Cass Corridor that was defaced less than 24 hours after he finished it.

Now he’ll have to start from scratch, as the mural was completely painted over on Wednesday.

“When doing actual street art, as opposed to commissioned murals, you know going in that it may not last,” Devins wrote in a post on Instagram. “That said, I’m surprised at the speed in which the Sep. 4th mural was defaced and now, painted over. The Em mural is no more. The fun Police strike again.”

The post was accompanied by a picture of the wall, at 3107 Cass Ave., which shows it’s back to its original brown.

Devins, a Chicago street artist who has done murals of rappers King Von and Juice WRLD in his home city, painted the Eminem mural on Saturday. Within a day it had been defaced, covered in bird heads inked by a Sharpie.
