England coach Chris Silverwood plots to name squad of up to 17 players for New Zealand Test series

England head coach Chris Silverwood to pick enlarged squad of up to 17 players for June’s Test series with New Zealand as the ECB looks to avoid any Covid-related disruption

  • England’s two-match Test series against New Zealand begins at Lord’s on June 2
  • The series will conclude a week before lockdown restrictions will be lifted
  • Chris Silverwood plans to name a bigger squad to avoid issues around protocols

England’s new selection supremo Chris Silverwood will name a larger-than-usual squad for the New Zealand Test series next month, which the ECB are hoping will be the only time this summer the players are confined to a Covid-secure bubble.

The two-match series begins at Lord’s on June 2 and concludes at Edgbaston the following week, seven days before the Government are due to lift all lockdown restrictions.

England head coach Silverwood replaced national selector Ed Smith last month as the ultimate authority on selection, but will initially be spared making tough choices due to the need for a large pool of players to call upon.

He is expected to name 16 or 17 players for the New Zealand Tests, which could be good news for fringe candidates James Bracey and Ollie Robinson, and bring a reprieve for Rory Burns.

Silverwood wants to have all bases covered because, with strict Covid mitigations being maintained for the series, it will be difficult to summon replacements in the event of injury or illness.

The ECB are planning to relax their protocols in line with the nationwide easing after June 21, so Silverwood will pick smaller squads for the white-ball series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan and the India Test series, as he should be able to call up additional players from elsewhere if required.
