Evacuation warnings issued after Yuba County vegetation fire erupts

Officials have issued evacuation warnings as firefighters battle a wind-driven vegetation fire near the community of Wheatland in Yuba County.

The fire, which began just past 2 p.m. in an unincorporated area of the county, has grown to more than 400 acres, said Mary Eldridge, a public information officer for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

One residence has been destroyed and multiple other structures are threatened, she said.

Evacuation warnings were initially in place for a zone that includes Kapaka, Hokan and Intanko lanes, as well as Monarch Trail Drive and Wichita Way, according to the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department. At 4:30 p.m., warnings were extended to another zone that includes the Waldo Junction area.

A map has been posted of the area under evacuation warnings.

The fire is heading in the direction of the Beale Air Force Base, Eldridge said. All base residents east of East Garryanna Drive have been ordered to evacuate to the base gym.

An evacuation center has been established at Wheatland Community Center at 101 C St. Large animals and other livestock can be taken to the Yuba County Posse Arena at 5396 Marysville Road.
