In a recent Instagram post, Jon Jones looks bigger than ever before, as he is expected to make his heavyweight debut in 2021.
Former light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, has been rather quiet on social media since his most recent title defense against Dominick Reyes at UFC 247 in February 2020. Jones wound up winning the fight via split decision, though pundits and media members felt differently on fight night.
Jones would relinquish the light heavyweight championship in August of 2020 over a lack of competitive challengers in the weight class. He took some time off to refocus and prepare the next chapter of his rather dominant Octagon career. Jones, who hasn’t formally lost a fight since a 2011 disqualification to long-time UFC veteran Matt Hamill, finally settled on heavyweight to secure his place in the sport of MMA and begin the next chapter of his career.
During his extended layoff, it appears that Jones looks bigger than anyone has ever seen him, as he looks to make his heavyweight debut at some point in 2021. At press time, Jones does not have a fight scheduled and it remains to be seen who his first opponent will be.
From Jones’ recent Instagram post, the move to heavyweight seems like one that he’s rather happy with at this stage of his career.
“It feels good to not be depriving myself of food anymore,” Jones wrote. “Can’t fit any of my suits, but I’m moving well.”
Jones’ star power, despite his absences from the sport, remains unchanged. In the last six hours, the post has received over 186,000 likes and nearly 2,900 comments from fans, fellow athletes, and others around the world.
Jon Jones has beat a whos-who list of names at light heavyweight
Jones has had little to no trouble with the vast majority of his opponents. 2021 marks Jones’ 13th year in the sport.
He has defeated the likes of Chael Sonnen, Quinton Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Alexander Gustafson (x2), and Daniel Cormier (x2) throughout his run of dominance.
Only time will tell regarding his future, and how he will be remembered when he finally decides to hang up the gloves for good.
