Rashford Sends Heartfelt Message To Van De Beek As Injury Rules Him Out Of Euro 2020 – Independent Newspaper Nigeria

Marcus Rashford has sent a message of support to his Manchester United teammate Donny van de Beek, who has been ruled out of the Euro 2020 through injury.

A groin injury has ruled the midfielder out of the tournament – continuing his difficult season which saw him limited to just four Premier League starts for United.

Van de Beek has won 19 caps for the Netherlands but has not made an international appearance since 30 March, when he featured in the 7-0 victory over Gibraltar in a World Cup qualifier.

Netherlands head coach Frank de Boer did not select the midfielder for his side’s pre-tournament friendly against Georgia on Sunday.

But van de Beek was named on the bench in the 2-2 draw with Scotland prior to that.

The absence of the former Ajax midfielder will however represent a significant blow to the Dutch, although no player will be called up to occupy his place in the squad.

Van de Beek sealed a £40million move to Old Trafford a year ago but he failed to establish himself in the starting line-up amid competition from the likes of established stars Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba.

As a result, the Dutch midfielder completed just 511 minutes of Premier League football across his first campaign in England – a statistic which is thought to have damaged his chances of a starting role for the international side this summer.

The Dutch have central midfielders such as Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong, former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, Davy Klaassen – once of Everton – and Atalanta regular Martin de Roon.

The Dutch FA confirmed on Tuesday via a statement: “Donny van de Beek misses Euro 2020. Van de Beek has to let the European Championship pass by.

“The midfielder is struggling with an injury. As a result, he is not available in time for Euro 2020.

“Frank de Boer will not call a replacement for Van de Beek. Get well soon, Donny!”

That was followed up by a direct tweet from the midfielder’s United teammate Rashford, who advised van de Beek to take some time off before coming back strong ahead of the start of United’s new season.

The United and England forward tweeted: “Sorry mate.

“Take some time for yourself and keep your head high x.”
