UEFA Conference League group stage begins

Maccabi Tel Aviv have romped past Alashkert 4-1 while Maccabi Haifa drew 0-0 with Feyenoord as the group stage of the inaugural European Conference League kicked off with two games in Israel.

Stipe Perica, Gavril Kanichowki, Dan Biton from the penalty spot and Matan Hozez were on target for Tel Aviv.

Jose Embalo got the equaliser for Alashkert, the first-ever club from Armenia to make it into a European competition group stage, but they were overrun by their hosts.

The Conference League was set up to give clubs from smaller nations a chance to compete at continental level.

The third-tier event also features European competition newcomers Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar, Jose Mourinho’s Roma and Premier League glamour side Tottenham Hotspur.

The remaining 14 matchday one games are on Thursday.

The competition culminates in the final in the Albanian capital of Tirana on May 25, 2022.
